Förberedande steg: Vad du behöver för att komma igång

Step 1: Skapa ett Duplicator-paket av din WordPress-webbplats
Det första du behöver göra är att skapa en fullständig backup av din WordPress site.
You’ll then use this backup to create a duplicate of your website so that you can set up the redirects properly from your old domain to the new one.

När pluginet har aktiverats kommer det att add to ett Duplicator menu item i din WordPress admin. Du måste klicka på Duplicator-menyn och sedan klicka på knappen ”Skapa ny” för att skapa ett nytt paket eller en kopia av din WordPress-webbplats.
Duplicator kommer nu att initiera back wizard den kommer automatiskt att tilldela ett namn till detta paket.
Klicka på knappen ”Nästa” för att fortsätta.
Duplicator kommer nu att köra några tester för att se om allt är i order. Om tillägget hittar en issue kommer du att se en varning med instruktioner.
Om alla objekt är markerade med ”Bra” klickar du på knappen ”Bygg”.
Pluginet kommer nu att börja skapa ett dupliceringspaket av dina webbplatsfiler. Beroende på storleken på din webbplats kan den här processen ta några minuter.
När du är slutförd ser du ett alternativ för ”Download”. Click it will show you alternatives to download Both Files or download Installer and Archive (zip) separately.
Välj ”Both Files” för att downloada dem till din dator.
Archive-filen är en komplett kopia av dina WordPress-filer. Den innehåller dina WordPress themes, permalänk settings, plugins, uppladdare och alla andra filer som skapas av WordPress plugins.
Skriptet för att installera är en PHP-fil som automatiserar och run migreringen av WordPress genom att packa upp archive-filen.
Step-by-Step 2: Skapa en Database för ditt nya Domain Name
Innan du flyttar din WordPress site till den nya domänen behöver du en ny SQL database för att packa upp WordPress på ditt nya domain name.
Om du redan har skapat en database kan du hoppa över detta steg.
För att skapa en database måste du besöka ditt webbhotells kontos cPanel dashboard, rulla ner till ”Databases” section och sedan click på ”MySQL Databases” icon.
Vi kommer att visa dig hur du hittar den på Bluehost, men de grundläggande instruktionerna är desamma och bör gälla för alla hosting providers.
Logga in på instrumentpanelen för ditt Bluehost-konto och klicka på knappen ”Settings” under din website.
Under your site settings måste du växla till tabben ”Advanced”.
Rulla ner lite till cPanel section och click ”Hantera”.
Detta öppnar dashboard för cPanel.
Rulla ner till sektionen Databases och klicka på alternativet ”MySQL Databases”.
Note: Din kontrollpanel för webbhotell kan se något annorlunda ut än screenshots. Du bör dock fortfarande kunna hitta en Database section med ett alternativ för att skapa en new database.
Ange bara ett namn på din database och klicka sedan på knappen ”Create Database”.
cPanel kommer nu att skapa en new database åt you. Efter det måste du rulla ner till MySQL Users section.
Ange sedan ett användarnamn och ett password för din nya användare och click på knappen ”Create User”. Se till att obs/observera användarnamnet och passwordet på en säker plats.
Den nya användaren som you just skapade har fortfarande ej behörighet att arbeta i databasen. Låt oss ändra på det.
Rulla ner till section ”Add User to Database”. Först väljer du den användare av databasen som du skapade i dropdown-menyn bredvid fältet ”User”. Välj sedan den new database som du just har skapat och click på knappen ”Add”.
Därefter kommer du att bli ombedd att välja behörigheter för användaren.
Välj ”All Privileges” och klicka på knappen ”Make Changes” för att fortsätta.
Din database är nu klar och kan användas för att flytta WordPress till det nya domain name.
Se till att du obs/observerar databasens namn, användarnamn och password. Du kommer att behöva denna information i nästa steg.
Step-by-Step 3: Packa upp WordPress på ditt nya domain name
Nu måste du uploada Duplicator-filerna som du downloadade tidigare till ditt nya domain name.
I Duplicator-paketet ingår även din installation av WordPress. Det innebär att du inte behöver installera WordPress på din new domän.
Anslut först till ditt domain name med hjälp av en FTP-klient. När du är ansluten ska du se till att rotkatalogen på din website är helt tom.
Efter det kan du uploada filerna archive och installer till root directory. Denna anropas vanligtvis public_html.

Rulla ner lite för att enter informationen för den database you skapade i föregående steg.
Under det kommer Duplicator automatiskt att visa dig URL: en för din gamla domän och din nya domän.
Om allt ser bra ut klickar du på knappen ”Bekräfta” för att fortsätta.
Duplicator kommer nu att försöka ansluta till databasen med hjälp av den information you providerade.
Utan problem kommer du att få en bekräftelse. Annars visas en varning med detaljer om hur du fixar det.
Klicka på knappen ”Nästa” för att fortsätta.
Duplicator kommer nu att börja importera din WordPress website. När det är slutfört kommer du att se ett success message med en knapp för Admin Login.
Duplicator kommer automatiskt att update URL:er till ditt new domain name. Du kan nu klicka på knappen ”Admin Login” för att slutföra nästa steg.
Step-by-Step 4: Ställ in permanenta 301 redirects
Nästa steg är att peka användare som anländer till ditt gamla domain name till den nya domänen. Detta görs genom att konfigurera 301 redirects.
301 redirects är mycket viktiga för sökmotorsoptimering och för användarnas upplevelse. Adding them will allow you to automatically redirect users and search engines to your new domain name.
Med andra ord, när någon landar på ett post eller en page på din gamla domän, kommer de automatiskt att redirectas till samma post eller page på din new domän istället för att se ett 404 error.
För att hålla dina omdirigeringar på plats måste du hålla din gamla WordPress-installation aktiv så att den kan fortsätta att redirecta till den new som du just har skapat.
Det finns två sätt att konfigurera redirects. Den första metoden är enkel och tar bara några click. Den andra metoden är obligatorisk för att du ska kunna editera filer manuellt.
Metod 1: Ställ in 301 Redirects med All in One SEO
För den här metoden behöver du All in One SEO (AIOSEO). Det är det bästa WordPress SEO-tillägget på marknaden och allow you att enkelt optimera din WordPress website för SEO.
Först måste du installera och aktivera pluginet All in One SEO på din gamla domän. För mer detaljer, se vår Step-by-Step guide om hur du installerar ett plugin för WordPress.
Note: Du behöver minst Pro-versionen av pluginet för att få tillgång till redirect manager addon. Du kan också konfigurera AIOSEO på din new WordPress site för att öka din search engine ranking och trafik ännu mer.
Efter aktivering på din gamla domän måste du besöka All in One SEO ” Redirects page och klicka på knappen ’Activate Redirects ’.
Därefter måste du byta till tabben ”Full Omdirigera webbplats” och slå på ”Flytta webbplats” toggle.
Efter det måste du enter ditt nya domain name bredvid alternativet ”Relocate to domain”.
Glöm inte att klicka på knappen ”Save Changes” för att spara dina inställningar.
Metod 2: Ställ in manuellt Redirects till ny domän
Denna metod kräver att du redigerar WordPress .htaccess-filen på ditt gamla domain name.
Först måste du ansluta till din gamla site med FTP och editera .htaccess-filen.
This will be located in the same directory as your wp-includes or wp-admin folder. Öppna .htaccess-filen och klistra in följande rader med kod högst upp:
#Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
Unchanged: RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.newsite.com/$1 [R=301,L]
Se till att du ersätter newsite.com med din new domän i koden ovan.
När du har tillämpat dessa ändringar besöker du ditt gamla domain name. Den ska automatiskt redirecta you till den new domänen.
Om den inte gör det betyder det att redirecten inte är korrekt konfigurerad och att din server troligen inte har support för redirect-regler. You need to contact the support team at your web hosting company to get RewriteEngine turned on.
Step-by-Step 5: Meddela Google om din nya domän
Nu när du har flyttat WordPress till ett nytt domain name och ställt in redirects är det dags att meddela Google om din adressändring. Detta kommer att hjälpa Google att hitta din new website domän snabbt och börja visa den i sökresultaten.
Först måste du se till att både dina nya och gamla domäner läggs till i Google Search Console som två olika egenskaper. Se steg 1 i vår guide till Google Search Console för instruktioner.

Du kan göra detta genom att helt enkelt skriva ett blogginlägg om din new site och dela det på dina konton på social media.
Om du har prenumeranter på nyhetsbrev via e-post eller push notifications bör du skicka ut ett meddelande till dem också.
Detta kan vara till hjälp på många sätt.
Först och främst är det mer troligt att dina användare gillar att komma ihåg den nya domänen när de har läst om den.
För det andra kan du be dina användare att meddela dig om de ser några buggar. Du kan inte ensam testa din webbplats i alla typer av webbläsare eller systemmiljöer, så det är alltid bra att låta ett par nya ögon titta på den.

The UIs have changed a bit so the screen shots could be updated, but it’s easy enough to figure out. The deleting the database thing is a little scary and confusing. I created a new database and installed it there, which worked well. Otherwise it might have deleted my existing (now old) database and re-written it. I wanted to leave the whole old site intact until the new site was up and then do the 303 redirect. Google’s Search Console UI has also been updated, but that’s easy enough to figure out through a quick google search.

You can change domain names on existing host by simply changing DNS and pointing the new domain to your existing WordPress install. However, you will still need to update URLs in WordPress, setup redirects, and inform search engines about the address change.

One question I have is if I need to do anything different given my scenario. I have the live old domain, and I have a live dev site that is just simply not indexed. The dev site is the one I want to push to the new domain, so I figured I could skip updating the old domain altogether. I’ve spent the past year as managing editor of a reasonably popular academic blog. I’m thinking of using duplicator to create a copy of the blog to be stored secretly on a subdomain of my own personal website. That way, I can show prospective employers a record of my editorial work. Do you anticipate this causing any problems for the actual blog as long as I tell search engines not to index the duplicate and don’t set up 301 redirects or notify google?

You can do that but search engines may still crawl your website. To be extra cautious we would recommend you to password protect the entire subdomain with .htaccess. This way search engines will not be able to crawl it and you can send a link along with username and password to anyone.

1. I am thinking of moving blog.old-domain,com to newdomain.com… So is duplicator going to change all links properly? For instance, if the old site had an article: blog.old-domain.com/this-is-article, will it be now created as newdomain.com/this-is-article ?
2. Once I redirect using 301, should I do anything with the content on the old site? Should I leave it or delete it? If I do leave it, I guess I have to keep renewing the old domain as well?

great tutorial, major time saver. I notified Google of the changes through the webmaster tools and it was a breeze. Just want to ask, do you recommend also doing the same thing in Bing webmaster tools? I don’t really put much emphasis on Bing in general but if it would help somehow, I would do it. The process is more complicated and if it can be avoided that’s really what I want to hear but if it’s a good idea, I will take the time to do it. I have been penalised by G (penguin 3) on one of my music sites as I stupidly bought too many bad link packages from fiverr a few years ago and my domain is just considered spammy now.
Will this work if I want to swap my site content to a new domain BUT not 301 my old site to the new site? And if so,should I de-index my old site immediately after the transfer or before?

Hello,
I displaced my website ”http://www.mywebsite.com” to ”http://www.mywebsite.com/blog” and after a few months, I displaced posts as before and I deleted all content from /blog.
The problem is that Google still reference the same article as duplicate content, I do the redirection links manually, but there are more than 9000 links deemed not found, I will not finish!
I tried to solve this problem with the tool of Yoast ”https://yoast.com/wp-content/permalink-helper.php,” but either it doesn’t work for me, or that I haven’t understand how.

If your temporarily URL was public and you didn’t block search engines, then there is a chance that search engines may have crawled the URL. Sometimes a URL may not appear in search index but is still out there and can appear at any time. So you should setup a 301 redirect just to be safe.
On the other hand, if you are pretty sure that it was not crawled or indexed by search engines then you don’t need to set up 301 redirect.
As for step 2. please see our guide on how to use FTP to upload or edit WordPress files.

If I am just moving from a temporary URL to my permanent URL, should I still do a 301 redirect? Also, if I didnt submit the site to GWT’s yet, I assume I don’t have to change address in GWT’s, just submit to GWT’s after the domain transfer is done, correct? Lastly, in the middle of step 2 above, ”Next you need to open your FTP and connect to your new site”….what dose this mean exactly? Open FTP and connect to what? Thanks anyone, pretty newbie here.

As for your concern about Google Indexing a site that you don’t want to be indexed. You can add a robots.txt file to the root directory of that domain and instruct Google and all other bots not to crawl or index that site.

Thank you! You guys are great! I’m a little ahead of the game and did some things out of order. I moved all content to a newly redesigned blog site at a subdomain Then I switched around the theme, etc on the WP.com blog.
I already own the name of my active blog and have been using that for 7 years at the dot com site. So I do have some readers and a ton of content and I have it linked to Twitter and LinkedIn.
I would think that pointing CactusWrangler to my new subdomain blog should bring my indexing and followers with it, but maybe not. All the content and media is on the new site. I did it all with Jetpack plug in… So am I just ready to tell GoDaddy my new DNS information? Unfortunately, Jetpack’s WP support is out till Sept 24!
Yikes ! My goal is to make my website and blog look similar so the linking back and forth is smooth and congruent. Once I get this done, I need to switch the themes on the main website which is an active site since 1998.

Does this also apply to moving from WP.com to WP.org? I created a subdomain on my website for my blog so I could create a new design. I have had a blog on WP.com and moved the content to the new design. Now I have two identical sites and I need to shut down the .com one before google marks my new one as fake. I’m trying to figure out the next steps. I haven’t technically gone ”live” with the subdomain yet, so my URL for the blog still points to the .com site. The comment below about subdomains concerns me. Is there something I need to watch out for?

I was dreading moving my wife’s large site to a new URL. Your instructions are the clearest I could find and the process was not so bad after all. Thanks so much. Best of all, it all works. Still have a few page titles, and SEO settings to manually change. Now I don’t have quite the depth of gratitude in the bank with my wife as I had hoped for, but that’s all for the best, I suppose.

I have a multisite install. I want to move just one website from that installation.
I already have the new website up and running and just need to make the 301 redirects.
The website I’m moving is oldsite.com/the-site and I’m moving it to newsite.com
How can I do this without redirecting all the websites in the multisite installation?

No, if your users can still access your site and posts at the same URLs as they did before then you need to set up 301 redirection. But if they can’t then this means search engines cant do that either. That way you will be losing a lot of traffic and your search rankings as well.

Well, since the old domain will simply be a redirect to the new one, this can be problematic since results are all absolute in search engines. Guess I have some 301s to create. Thank you for the quick reply.

We are simply changing our WP URL – not moving. Are 301 redirects still needed if we follow permalink and notify users steps?

The url currently looks like this http://www.oldsite.com/newsite.com how do I change this to a regulat newsite.com?

I have one more query.. It has been 20 days i have moved my site to the new domain successfully by following the above steps. Now given that the old domain is still live and redirects users to new domain, should i consider deleting the old domain data to avoid duplication penalties. Kindly suggest…

Great resource thanks! Is there a way to only redirect the blog articles and not the entire site? We’re creating a whole new website for one area of a business so only some of the old websites pages are switching to the new site and the rest are staying on the old site.

you can exclude subdomains from your .htaccess file by adding this line just before the RewriteRule line :
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^subdomain.example.com$ [NC]

now when i try to access subdomain.olddomain.com it redirects to newdomain.com/subdomain.olddomain.com
