Step 0. Kom igång
För att komma igång med WordPress måste du registrera dig för ett konto på ett webbhotell och registrera ett domain name.

Om din Squarespace-webbplats har sitt eget custom domain name, kanske du vill överföra den domänen till ditt nya webbhotell.
Alternativt måste du ändra din Squarespace domäns DNS-namnservrar för att peka mot din new server.
Under flyttprocessen och efter domänöverföringen kommer du att kunna komma åt din Squarespace website eftersom den kommer att börja använda den built-in Squarespace subdomain.
Step-by-Step 1. Installera WordPress
När du har registrerat dig på ett webbhotell är nästa steg att installera WordPress.
WordPress är världens mest populära website-byggare och är känd för sin berömda 5-minuters install.
Om du har Bluehost installerar de WordPress automatiskt åt dig.
De flesta andra högst upp WordPress webbhotell företag tillåter dig också att installera WordPress med ett enda click från din hosting dashboard.

När du har installerat WordPress kan du logga in på din WordPress dashboard (admin area).
Step-by-Step 2. Exportera Squarespace content
När du har installerat WordPress på ditt new webhotell är nästa steg att exportera ditt content från Squarespace.
Squarespace erbjuder limiterade funktioner för att exportera. Beroende på vilket content du har på din site kommer en del av det att exporteras.
Resten av innehållet kommer att finnas kvar på din Squarespace built-in domän, och du måste manuellt copy and paste det.
Här är det content som kan exporteras automatiskt:
- All your basic pages kommer att exporteras som WordPress pages.
- En sida med en blogg exporteras och visas i listan över pages i WordPress som ”Blog”.
- All your blogginlägg under den ena bloggsidan exporteras som WordPress posts.
- Your Gallery pages kommer att exporteras.
- Blocken Text, Image och Embed exporteras.
Följande content kommer ej att exporteras:
- Produktsidor, Album-sidor och Händelse-sidor exporteras eller ej.
- Blocken Ljud, Videoklipp och Produkt exporteras eller ej.
- Ändringar av Styling och customize CSS kommer ej att inkluderas.
- Folders och index pages kommer att utelämnas.
- Om you har mer än en blogg page, så exporteras bara en av dem.
Obs/observera: Under importprocessen kommer dina Squarespace images inte att importeras. Vi kommer att visa you hur du importerar dem senare.
Nu när du vet hur begränsande Squarespace är, låt oss gå vidare och exportera innehållet så att du kan få en ny start med WordPress och utveckla din website på rätt sätt.
Gå till Settings ” Website under your Squarespace account och klicka sedan på tabben ’Import & Export Content’.
Då kommer du till inställningarna för import/export.
Klicka sedan på knappen ”Exportera” för att fortsätta.
Squarespace kommer nu att visa dig en popup med en WordPress logga på. Squarespace exporterar endast content i ett format som är lämpligt för WordPress.
Klicka sedan på WordPress-loggan för att fortsätta.
Du kommer att se hur långt exportprocessen har kommit till vänster under knapparna för import-export.
När exporten är slutförd kommer du att se en knapp för att downloada din exportfil.
Gå vidare och downloada filen för att exportera till din dator.
Du behöver den i nästa steg när du importerar innehållet till din new website i WordPress.
Step-by-Step 3. Importera content från Squarespace till WordPress
Nästa steg är att importera det content som du downloadade från Squarespace till din WordPress site.
Logga in på din WordPress admin area och gå till Tools ” Import i den vänstra menyn. Du kommer att se en lista med plattformar att välja mellan.
Squarespace kommer ej att listas där eftersom det exporterar content i ett WordPress-kompatibelt XML-format. Allt detta innebär är att du måste klicka på knappen ”Installera nu” under WordPress för att fortsätta.
WordPress kommer nu att hämta och installera importören åt dig.
När du är slutförd måste du klicka på länken ”Run importer” för att fortsätta.
På nästa vy klickar du på knappen ”Choose File”.
Välj den fil som du tidigare downloadade från Squarespace och klicka på knappen ”Upload file and import”.
WordPress kommer nu att uploada filen och undersöka dess content för att se till att den är i ett format som stöds.
Om allt är i order kommer WordPress att visa dig sidan med inställningar för import.
På den här page måste du välja ett författarnamn för det importerade contentet.
WordPress kan också importera Squarespace-användare och add to dem till rollen Prenumerant i WordPress. Du kan också välja en befintlig administratörsanvändare som författare eller skapa en new användare.
Det finns också ett alternativ att importera attachment images, men det kommer inte att fungera för detta. Oroa dig inte, vi kommer att visa dig hur du fixar det senare.
Gå vidare och klicka på knappen ”Submit” så att WordPress kan börja importera content från din Squarespace-exportfil.
När det är klart kommer du att se success message. Du kan nu besöka pages och posts i WordPress för att reviewer det importerade innehållet.
Step-by-Step 4. Importera Images från Squarespace
Tyvärr kan WordPress importör inte importera images från din Squarespace website. You will have to manually import those images, but there is an automated way to do it.
Det första du behöver göra är att installera och aktivera pluginet Auto Upload Images. För mer detaljer, se vår Step-by-Step guide om hur du installerar ett WordPress plugin.
Vid aktivering måste du edit alla posts och pages som innehåller images. Detta kommer att utlösa processen för import av images när du sparar en post type.
Lyckligtvis allow WordPress dig att bulk update content, så att du kan göra det med bara några click istället för att manuellt göra det en efter en.
Gå bara till sidan Posts ” All Posts och klicka sedan på knappen Screen Options högst upp.
You need to increase the number to 999 in the ”Number of items per page field” field and click ”Tillämpa”.
WordPress kommer att ladda om page och den här gången visas 999 posts kl. Därefter måste du välja alla dina posts och sedan select ”Edit” under bulk actions menu.
Efter det måste du klicka på knappen ”Tillämpa”.
WordPress kommer att visa dig en quick edit box som listar alla valda posts. You just need to click on the ”Update” button, and WordPress will update all your posts.
Kom ihåg att du inte ändrar något utan bara klickar på knappen ”Update”.
Om du gör detta kommer Auto Upload Images plugin att importera de externa bilderna från Squarespace och lagra dem i ditt WordPress mediabibliotek.
Beroende på hur många posts och images du har på din website kan det hända att pluginet inte kan utlösa en import för alltihop på en gång.
I så fall kan du välja och updating posterna igen.
Pluginet importerar endast de images som ej importeras och hoppar över de som importerades förra gången.

Steg 5. Fixa permalänkar
Vi måste se till att du inte missar trafik som kommer via links från din gamla Squarespace website.
WordPress använder en sökmotorsoptimerande URL-struktur, vilket allow you att customize länkstrukturen på många olika sätt.
Målet här är att din link-struktur ska likna din Squarespace website. Squarespace använder år/månad/dag/postnamn som länkformat för blogginlägg.
Det använder också ett prefix som ”blogg” eller ”blog-1” i URL: erna för inlägg.
En typisk URL för blogginlägg med standard built-in Squarespace domain name kan se ut så här:
https://example-website.squarespace.com/blog-1/2016/3/6/post-title
Om du använde ditt eget domain name med Squarespace, kan en typisk URL för blogginlägg se ut så här:
https://www.yourdomain.com/blog-1/2016/3/6/post-title
I WordPress admin area måste du gå till Settings ” Permalinks page.
Där kommer du att se en lista med alternativ för URL-struktur. Den close matcha till din gamla Squarespace URL är ”Day and Name”.
Klicka på alternativet ”Day and Name” och flytta sedan ner till ”Custom Structure”.
You will see that the custom structure section will be automatically filled with year, month number, day, and post name tags.
Du behöver bara add to prefixet ”blogg-1” före allt annat. Like this:
/blogg-1/%år%/%månad%/%dag%/%inläggsnamn%/
Klicka på knappen ”Save Changes” för att spara dina inställningar.
Detta steg ser till att användare som besöker din website från search engines och andra källor redirectas till korrekta posts och pages på din WordPress site.
Det finns fortfarande en chans att några av dina links kan resultera i 404 error i WordPress. Så här gör du för att spåra 404 pages och redirecta dem i WordPress.
Step-by-Step 6. Importera annat content från Squarespace till WordPress
Squarespace allow you only to exportera limit content. Om du använder deras utvalda funktioner för ecommerce, händelser eller serverar ljud och videoklipp måste du importera alltihop manuellt till din WordPress-webbplats.
Om du har en online store på Squarespace kan du downloada produktdata som en separat CSV-fil.
Gå till Settings ” Selling ” Products page under your Squarespace account och klicka sedan på alternativet ’Export All’.
För att importera produkter behöver du ett plugin för WordPress eCommerce, som WooCommerce.

Hello,
I am going to migrate my site from Squarespace to WordPress but I would like to do it without interrupting the activity of my current page. The name of the site should stay the same (URL) so is it possible to set up WordPress site properly without making a Squarespace site under construction? And then switch smoothly to WordPress when WordPress site is ready (keeping the same URL address)? Can I start creating the site in WordPress panel without mapping it to any domain at the beginning?

When I go to do Step 4, my WordPress site times out every time after I press update. I’m transferring a website with a few hundred blog posts that each have their own image, and I’m fearing that I will have to upload them individually at some point. Specifically I get a 502 error, taking too long to complete. Any idea how to help with the auto upload images process?

And I also have Domainname.com/tipsadvice/post-title for my lifestyle posts. How do I ensure that none of the links get broken in the move if I can only put one link structure in WP?

Thanks, this guide is very useful.
I found that for the import images function (using the Auto Upload Image plugin) I needed to do both All Posts and All Pages twice – the first time I got a server error… not sure whether that was the plugin’s fault (it hasn’t been updated in 9 months), or whether it was down to a dodgy internet connection (we’re being battered by a storm at the moment and it often affects our internet!)
Now I just need to choose a theme that looks something like the original website…

Thank you so much for this guide. I plan to use it closely to move my Squarespace site to WordPress.
My site is image heavy, and it may take a few days for me to follow all the steps. I have my own domain (www.mywebsite.com) which I will be moving over. My concern is that once I start the process, my site will not work until I have it up on WordPress. I would want my domain to go to my squarespace site until I am ready to move over.
I’m sure this is extremely common, so it’s surely an easy fix. What should I do?

Thank you for this helpful article. I’m running into an issue when trying to upload my .xml file that I’ve exported from Squarespace. The error message is:
”This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number
Try another file or contact support.”
I’ve googled extensively and followed the advice I’ve found, such as editing the .xml file from version 1.2 to 1.1 but so far my wordpress flatly refuses to import my Squarespace file.
Do you know how to fix this?

Hey there!
We are in the process of rebranding our event planning company. Currently, the site is using Squarespace, but we found a wordpress theme that is to die for!!
Is there any way to be working on the new WordPress theme until our Squarespace subscription expires in August without the Squarespace site going down?
Essentially, we want the WordPress site ready to launch as soon as the Squarespace site expires.
I do have my personal blog on WordPress already, so is there maybe a way to download the theme to my blog site, be editing it through there (without messing with my blog’s theme) and then export the theme and reimport it when we are ready to switch hosting platforms??

Some hosts have a staging environment that you can use to set up a site before replacing the active site. I’ve been following the steps and managed to download WordPress through SiteGround. I have been given the link to my wordpress admin page, but when I click on it I get the error: 404 Not Found.
Have I done something wrong? I’ve tried talking with SiteGround too, but not having much luck with this process at all.

Is this process still compatible now that WP 5.x has the new Guttenberg block editor?
Ideally, I would like to end up using native WP editing and themes as much as possible.
I had someone try to do a conversion and they used a plug-in called WPBaker/Visual Composer. I’m not excited about that – is my worry justified that isn’t the best approach?

The transfer process should still work with the most recent WordPress. The Visual Composer plugin is for customizing the style of your site and is not required.

Your WordPress login URL is usually like this:
example.com/wp-login.php
Replace example.com with your own domain name. After that you will be able to login using the username and password you entered during installation.

Yes you can point your domain back to your Squarespace site.
You can also try to figure out what’s going on. For example, you can go to Appearance » Customize page in WordPress admin area to set up your WordPress theme.

Hello (again) — quick questions
1. I can work within my ”temp” url until I update the DNS server so my domain name can switch from squarespace to wordpress — do I do this within Squarespace? currently my imported work is within the temp URL but i also have a http://www.mysite.wordpress.com url as well. I’m assuming once I update the dns server, http://www.mysite.com will be activated. I bought the premium plan so not sure why I have ”.wordpress.com”.
2. Do I need to buy a wordpress.com plan since I already have a domain name?? It seems to be a bit redundant to me..

However, I named the URL for my WordPress site a different name than my Wix site, so I could keep my original site while making the transfer. I now need to make my WordPress site the same URL as the one I was using for my Wix site. How do I do that?

I am banging my head against the wall trying to make this work. I followed all of these steps exactly. But every time I try to import the XML file to WordPress, it gives me a ”Page Not Found” error. Any idea what went wrong or what I’m doing wrong?

Sorry. Just now seeing that there’s a file size limit. So what do I do if my Squarespace XML file is too big? Can I manually break it down? I don’t know anything about this kind of file.

In your step 3, if your domain is pointed to Squarespace, you can’t log-in to wordpress… Any thoughts on the workaround?

When you sign up with one of the recommended web hosts, they will tell you how to point your domain to their servers. You can do that after exporting your content from Squarespace.

Yes, however I was wondering about getting your new WP site set-up and perfect while still keeping your Squarespace site live. Is that an option?

Yes it is possible. You can ask your web hosting service provider. Some of them offer a temporary subdomain, which you can use until you are ready to point your Squarespace domain to their servers.

I have to do something similar.
I have a website in a url let’s say http://www.example.com and its build and hosted with squarespace and In an other side I built a website on wordpress in a subdomain that my hosting (domain.com) has done it for me http://www.example.domain.com.
I would like to move the content and the whole site built on that subdomain with wordpress to the url http://www.example.com.
So not longer I will use the squarespace platform. I just would like to use the url that squarespace is using into my new wordpress site.
Do you know anything about this?

Thank you for timely help. I have no Squarespace experience, but I will be moving a Squarespace site to self-hosted WordPress next week.
Big Squarespace problem is that images are displayed using non-standard ”data-src.” Images from the site I am moving do not appear in Google image search.
