How We Test And Review Free WordPress Blog Themes
When choosing themes for this showcase, we installed each theme on our test site to explore its options, like styling, background, patterns, etc. This allowed us to recommend only the best free WordPress blog themes to our readers.
We’ve found that a good WordPress blog theme should offer a balance of these features:
- Only WordPress.org themes: We only choose themes that are available on WordPress.org. That means you can rest assured that every single theme included here meets the high standard imposed by the official WordPress theme review team.
- Rigorous theme selection: We only considered themes that are popular and highly rated by real WordPress users.
- User-friendly layout – A user-friendly layout helps visitors read your blog posts and navigate through your blog easily.
- Responsiveness – A fully responsive theme makes your blog look great on all screen sizes or devices.
- Customization – The theme should be customizable using the WordPress editor and any page builder. This way, you can edit fonts, colors, backgrounds, and other details of your WordPress blog.
- Performance – The theme should be fast and not affect the page loading time on your site. This way, your site can be fast and SEO-friendly.
We considered all these factors when selecting the best WordPress blog themes so you can easily set up your blog and get online right away.

Couldn’t agree more. This is exactly the kind of content that makes WPBeginner such a valuable resource. Researching 64 themes is a huge time-saver for readers. Maybe in the future, there could be an option to filter the themes by features like responsiveness or built-in SEO tools.

The appearance template is the most important foundation after the editorial system itself. It must be optimized not only for speed, but recently I have been emphasizing optimization for SEO, mainly to have clean code without unnecessary things. I often first test the bare template via GTmetrix and pagespeed insight. I have experience with Astra and also with Sydney. They are both great templates. I use GeneratePress for my website, which also has great customer support.

Do themes affect my website if I use any page builder?
I mean is it necessary to check if this themes is compatible with my page builder or not?
WPBeginner Support
It would depend on the page builder, normally they are not required but if you are attempting to tweak a theme with a page builder it would be best to check the compatibility.

Most of these themes are ancient. You’re kidding, right?
WPBeginner Support
Some of the themes have been around for some time but that does not mean they aren’t a good fit, we’ll certainly take a look at replacing any themes that are no longer working.

Can you help me choose between Illdy and Ascend theme, which is better for a science blog?
WPBeginner Support
Either should work for a science blog, it would mainly be your preference on how you would like the content displayed that would determine which you should use

Hi,
Quite some time ago I set up a blog on WP using a free theme, “Magnolia” something or other. It was offered in two colors:a plum/pink and blue. I can’t locate it now. Poof and it was gone. Did you discontinue it? And other options of similar designs?
I want an illustrated theme like rendered decorative art design, NOT photography of any kind in the theme.
I had not made the blog go live because I was still choosing categories. I would like to be able to pick up where I was and activate my blog.
Can you direct me or give me any help?
Thanks!
Elaine

I have started with using the theme modernize, which looks fine.
But there is only one area for widgets, sidebar.
It is not possible to deactivate widgets on certain pages, for example on “home”.
Now am looking for a similar theme which has the specs of “modernize”:
– one column page
– usage of page builder
– set a one column page to front page
And has the specs which I miss with “modernize”:
– more widget areas, footer area
– easy integration of social buttons via SHARING faciity
Thanks a lot for your help.

I am sorry but almost none of those themes look like a food blog theme. That’s not really a list that is helpful for the food bloggers. There are better options on Wordpress.org alone and your list doesn’t include even one of them?
Did you get paid to advertise these themes? Or did the author of the article didn’t bother to do a little research?
WPBeginner Support
Hi Joan,
These are just best free WordPress themes for general blogs. Please see our WordPress themes for recipe blogs it has both free and paid themes.
