Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Having helped over 400,000+ business owners create their website and choose the best plugins, we have answered a lot of questions. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about WordPress plugins.

What is a WordPress plugin and how do they work?

WordPress plugins are like apps for your website that allow you to add custom features and functionality like contact form, eCommerce, etc. The concept is similar to the apps on your smart phone.

For more detailed explanation, see our beginner’s guide on what are WordPress plugins.

Do WordPress plugins affect site speed?

It really depends on the plugin, but yes WordPress plugins can affect your site speed if they’re not coded well. However most well-coded WordPress plugins will NOT slow down your website especially if you’re using proper caching and following our WordPress performance best practices.

WordPress plugins that run exclusively on the admin area like WP Mail SMTP, Uncanny Automator, etc., will never slow down your website because they don’t load on the frontend.

But when a plugin loads assets like images, scripts, and other files as your website loads for users (frontend), then they can impact your overall website speed. This is why choosing the right WordPress plugins is important, and the ones that we recommend in our list are performance optimized.

For more details, see our guide on how WordPress plugins affect your site’s load time.

How many plugins should I use in WordPress?

A typical WordPress website will have anywhere between 15 to 18 WordPress plugins. But the answer to how many plugins should you use is as many as you truly need and no more.

It’s not the quantity of WordPress plugins that slow down your website but rather it’s the quality.

The WPBeginner website has over 62 active plugins, and it’s blazing fast. That’s because we’re using high quality WordPress plugins. Typically on most of our websites, we have over 30+ active plugins to speed up our workflow.

Often when someone says “it is the plugins that are slowing down your site”, they’re simply not experienced enough and are giving this answer out of frustration.

For a more detailed explanation on this topic, see our comprehensive on how many WordPress plugins should you install and what’s too many.

Are WordPress plugins worth it?

Yes, premium WordPress plugins are worth every penny because they help you save thousands of dollars in custom development costs. Not to mention, you will get access to expert support and new features regularly.

WordPress plugins are also far cheaper than their SaaS alternatives because most plugins are self-hosted on your site. This means you have full control over your data.

For example, to build a custom form solution like WPForms that gives you access to drag & drop form builder, smart conditional logic, hundreds of templates, dozens of integrations, and powerful features like surveys, polls, payment capability, etc., would cost you tens of thousands of dollars. But you can buy the premium license starting at only $39 for Basic license and $199 for Pro license.

Comparatively, Typeform, a SaaS form building tool which only does a fraction of what WPForms does will cost you $996 / year.

Do professional developers use WordPress plugins over custom code?

Yes, professional developers always use WordPress plugins to speed up their workflow, so they can earn more profit on their client projects. There is no point reinventing the wheel when an existing tool does the job far better.

For example, when you ask a professional development agency to build an eCommerce website, they might quote you $15,000 for the project, but behind the scenes they use the plugins to make the project more profitable for them and more affordable for you.

They might use MonsterInsights to setup all conversion tracking, FunnelKit to create custom order forms, All in One SEO for proper SEO schema setup, and so on.

This is why most WordPress plugin companies offer Agency licenses so developers can use them on client projects.

What is the best free plugin for WordPress?

Some of the best free WordPress plugins include WPForms, All in One SEO, MonsterInsights, SeedProd, WP Mail SMTP, OptinMonster, and WPCode.

What are the top 5 plugins you typically use on WordPress sites?

The top 5 WordPress plugins that we install on all our websites include:

  1. WPForms – every website needs a contact form and likely other type of forms, and this is the best WordPress form builder plugin.
  2. AIOSEO – this is an All in One SEO toolkit that helps your website rank higher in search engines.
  3. MonsterInsights – this is the #1 analytics plugin for WordPress. You can’t improve what you can’t measure, and this plugin helps you grow your website with confidence.
  4. SeedProd – this lets you build custom website designs and landing pages faster.
  5. WPCode – this is a code snippets plugin that lets you replace at least a dozen plugins with their expert code snippet library. It’s super easy even a beginner can use it.

Aside from these, we always install a backup plugin like Duplicator, and a caching plugin like WP Rocket or WP Super Cache. We also use WP Mail SMTP to ensure our website emails get delivered and OptinMonster to ensure we unlock maximum revenue potential from each website visitor.

This is a great post for any business owner using WordPress!
I especially liked seeing AIOSEO on the list. It’s been a lifesaver for headlines and SEO Analyzer.
On another note, has anyone had success with any email marketing plugins specifically for e-commerce stores? I’m looking for something to streamline my email marketing efforts.

    • Mrteesurez

I’m glad you found AIOSEO helpful, it’s been a game-changer for me too, especially with optimizing headlines and improving SEO. For email marketing in e-commerce, I’ve had great success with plugins like Convertkit for WooCommerce and Mailerlite. They integrate seamlessly with WordPress, allowing for automated campaigns and personalized email sequences that can boost engagement and sales. Have you considered trying any of these, or do you have specific features you’re looking for in an email marketing tool?

    • Moinuddin Waheed

I agree that AIOSEO is very very powerful plugin in terms of seo features.
This is a standalone plugin for any one who is just starting their seo journey.
For email list growing, I would recommend to use MailChimp or mailer lite if you are just starting out.
Their free version will give you all the options to checkout and learn the basics of email marketing.
once you get enough of this, you can always upgrade to constant contact or mailer lite pro version.

  3. Dennis Muthomi

I have used a few of the plugins mentioned in this comprehensive list, including Pretty Links Pro, OptinMonster, and WP Forms.
Those have worked quite well for me, even today.
I remember back then when seedprod was mainly used for creating coming soon and maintenance mode pages, its good to see that it has evolved to something more than just a coming soon page builder.

    • Mrteesurez

Thanks for bringing up these memories! I remember when SeedProd was primarily known for its coming soon and maintenance mode pages too. It’s impressive to see how it has evolved into a full-fledged page builder. I’ve used OptinMonster, and WP Forms as well, but SeedProd has become my favorite. Its unique features, like pre-built templates and drag-and-drop functionality, have made my design process smoother and more efficient. It’s now much more than just a coming soon page builder, it’s a powerful tool that can handle entire websites with ease.

  4. Dayo Olobayo

This is a great list of plugins to consider for any business website. I particularly like the emphasis on both SEO (All in One SEO, MonsterInsights) and user experience (WPForms, OptinMonster). In today’s competitive online landscape, it’s crucial to attract visitors through search engines and then keep them engaged on your site with a user-friendly interface and clear calls to action.

    • Moinuddin Waheed

you are right Mr. Dalo Olobayo about the effectiveness and usefulness of AIOSEO.
I have been using this plugin for all my seo needs.
I particularly like about headline analyser and true seo score.
it makes the task of creating effective content easy and smooth.
The simple and minimal interface despite having all the seo essentials makes it more interesting.

  5. Mrteesurez

Although not all are plugins but all are essential for a website. The fact is one may not be able to use all because of the management and cost attached but there are some that are must use plugin like WPForms (contact form), Sucuri (security), Optinmonster (lead), Monsterinsights (analytics), WP Mail SMTP (email) and some others essential like that. No matter the type of website you are creating you have to use them.

    • kzain

While some website elements might not technically be plugins, they all contribute to a well-rounded and functional website. It’s definitely a balancing act to choose the right tools considering management and cost.

I completely agree with your list of must-use plugins – WPForms, Sucuri, OptinMonster, MonsterInsights, and WP Mail SMTP are all great choices that cover crucial aspects like contact, security, lead generation, analytics, and email functionality

  6. Amandeep Kaur

This is an awesome post. I was just wondering which of these would you recommend a new website to immediately install to enable one to drive traffic to a new website

  7. Mrteesurez

I have heard many times that one can now create completely custom WordPress themes using SeedProd builder without any code. Is this real ??
Is there a free version of Seedprod that one can just test out ??

Also I cherish AffiliateWP, I like it like sugar.
I am looking forward to use it.

I see you don’t mention Wordfence, it’s. Wordfence is awful

    • WPBeginner Support

There is a free version of SeedProd you can use to try some of the features, it is on the WordPress.org repository and you can also find it under Plugins>Add New in your dashboard.

      Admin

      • Mrteesurez

        “On the WordPress repository ?”
I don’t think I have ever make contact with it before as I used to test hundreds of WordPress plugins, huuh, yes I love that.

I will check it out, thanks.

        • WPBeginner Support

The WordpRess.org plugin repository is the plugins that you see under Plugins>Add New. The WordPress.org site is where you can see the plugin repository :)

  8. Nick Scarpa

Thanks for the plugin list. This is very helpful and I currently use some of these in my site builds.
I was a bit disappointed that the SeedProd Lite plugin is very limited in what you can do in terms of building pages. I was hoping to give it a test drive but most of the options are only available in Pro version.
For now, I will continue with Elementor, Beaverbuilder, Divi and Generatepress.

    Keep the helpful info coming!

    • Moinuddin Waheed

Seedprod was initially made for coming soon and maintenance mode page and eventually made into something very good.
it is now a full fledged page builder and I think the only theme builder in the market.
You are right that the free version comes with very limited use specially for landing pages.
But believe me it is worth having the pro version.
I have used other famous page builders but left due to many reasons, one of them being the page speed which is very well taken care by seedprod.

  9. Ahmed Omar

Fantastic list, thank you! WP plugins and tools are changing and evolving so fast but thanks to your site us WordPress users are always in the know what the best plugins and tools are to use!
I am already using AIOSEO, Constant contact

  10. Moinuddin Waheed

These are all must have plugins for making a successful online business or blog.
Barring few, I am a huge fan of all of the mentioned plugins.
Although the fact remains that beginners wouldn’t be able to afford all of these unless they have a very good budget.
Most of these plugins come with light free version to explore before making a purchase decision.
Thanks for bringing this comprehensive list of essential plugins.

  11. Jiří Vaněk

Thanks for the list of tips. I actively use some plugins from the list, I would like to look at some recommendations. For 2024, I made it my mission to learn more with Woocommerce and there are quite a few articles on it here, which is great.

  12. Uzair

Wow, this article nailed it with its picks for the best WordPress plugins! As a developer who’s been building websites for years, I’ve seen some real magic from tools like WP Rocket, WP Forms, and WP-mail SMTP. WPML is a recent addition to my plugin list, and I’m currently loving it on my client’s website. These are absolute lifesavers in my toolkit.

    • WPBeginner Support

Glad you like our recommendations :)

      Admin

  13. Fajri

WPForms is a must for me. I installed it to my every website.

It’s a very useful plugin when it comes to collecting leads.

Even if your website is not focusing into leads, the free version works great for making a contact form.

I suggest you to start using this lite yet powerful plugin.

  14. Moinuddin Waheed

Having essential plugins helps us make the website progress faster and efficient. it gives the sense of the job is half done already just by installing it.
But seeing the list and this much number of essential plugins, I get into dilemma of thinking whether these combine list will slow down the website speed or cause some othe perfomance issues?

      • Moinuddin Waheed

Thanks for recommending to the guide on how many plugins should and can be installed on a single site.
what I have understood through the article, it is not how many plugins that is installed that matters but how many quality plugins with proven track record and support have been uploaded in the site does matter.
we can have as many plugins as we wish as long as these plugins adhere to the WordPress code standards and have support available.
I really appreciate the efforts of wpbeginner for putting this much efforts to make sure every question gets answered the right way.

  15. THANKGOD JONATHAN

    A very strong list.
Can someone use all this on one side. I see thenlist is too big for a single side. However the plugins are all good and very important for a website to have it.

    • WPBeginner Support

You can use the plugins from our list on one site, we would recommend looking at the uses for the plugins before adding them to your site as not all sites need every plugin :)

  16. Sameer Hussain

detailed post with many important helpful plugins.
it can be summarized for must have plugins in my opinion:
    SEO plugin —-> AIOSEO
    Duplicator plugin
    open new window plugin
    internal link plugin
Subscriber and newsletter plugin —-> constant contact
I think these are essential from day 1

This is one of the most thorough guide for any starting a new blog or online business. I have had already used many of the plugins listed here and I can testify the authencity of the details that you have provided. I wan not aware until now that most of these awesome plugins for wordpress development and solutions are directly or indirectly the wpbeginner’s product. It is infact heartening to see that how much a wordpress blog can achieve in terms of its potential to bring positive outcomes and revenue. Thanks a ton for bringing such detailed informational post.
I have decided to invest one hour daily on wpbeginner to learn everything of wordpress.
I am confident wpbeginner has all the tools and guides that i will need in the future.

    • Jiří Vaněk

If you are new to WordPress, I personally recommend WPForms and AIO SEO. These are, in my opinion, the two most useful WordPress plugins you can have. Otherwise, many things can be conveniently solved with so-called snippets instead of plugins. So the third plugin to the equipment is WPCode and what you can, try to solve it with a snippet instead of a plugin. It’s a faster solution for your website, it doesn’t consume as much memory, and overall, using snippets instead of plugins makes the website more responsive. If you want to learn more about WordPress, then focus on this page of how this conten management system works.

Thanks for sharing this information this blog is very informational for me but i try some paid plugin and they have not extra functionality

    • WPBeginner Support

It would depend on which plugins you tried and what functionality you were looking to add. The plugins with paid versions in this guide should all have additional tools in their paid versions.
