WPBeginner v5 – Ny site-design och vad som händer härnäst

Om du hämtar WPBeginner idag har du kanske noterat att vi har en new design på vår website. Med tanke på att vår senaste design var från 2012, skulle många av er säga att det är på tiden att vi uppdaterar WPBeginner. Jag vill dela med mig av några insikter från vår omdesignprocess, vad vi lärde oss, varför det tog så lång tid, och viktigast av allt vad som är nytt i den nya designen.

Lite bakgrund

Jag startade WPBeginner 2009. Under de första 3 åren gick WPBeginner igenom 4 redesigns. Det tar upp en hel del resurser som kunde ha använts bättre på vårt core-uppdrag:

Att hjälpa småföretag att växa och konkurrera med de stora genom våra tools, vårt team och vår utbildning.

Efter WPBv4 gjorde jag det till en punkt att fokusera på vår core och resultaten är häpnadsväckande.

Under de senaste fyra åren har

  • Vi skapade över tusen gratis WordPress tutorials på WPBeginners blogg.
  • Vi har lagt till över 500+ nya tutorial videos på vår YouTube-kanal.
  • Vi har add to över 100 termer i vår WordPress Ordlista.
  • Vi lanserade OptinMonster – ett verktyg som konverterar övergivna website-besökare till prenumeranter. Våra optin-formulär viewas flera miljarder gånger i månaden.
  • Vi lanserade Envira Gallery, den mest kraftfulla gallerilösningen för WordPress, för att hjälpa våra användare att enkelt skapa foto- och videoklippsgallerier utan att sakta ner deras websites.
  • Vi lanserade Soliloquy, ett användarvänligt tillägg för responsiva sliders i WordPress som sätter prestanda och användarupplevelse i första rummet.
  • Vi lanserade WPForms, det mest nybörjarvänliga WordPress-formulärpluginet baserat på din återkoppling och dina förslag.
  • Tidigare i år förvärvade vi Yoast Analytics och döpte om det till MonsterInsights. Vi håller på att skriva om hela pluginet för att göra Google Analytics enkelt för nybörjare.

Tillsammans har våra tillägg laddats ner över 13 miljoner gånger och används aktivt på över 2 miljoner websites.

Även om all detta är fantastiska prestationer har vi en new uppsättning utmaningar som vi måste ta itu med om vi vill fortsätta att förbättra och tjäna vårt uppdrag.

Detta för mig till WPBeginner v5.

Design med data

Under de senaste åren har användningen av mobila enheter ökat ganska markant för de flesta websites. Det är därför vi alltid rekommenderat alla att välja ett mobilvänligt, responsivt WordPress theme när de startar en blogg.

Detta var lite ironiskt eftersom vår egen website ej var responsiv. Vi fick mycket kritik på social media från andra WordPress-designers och utvecklare i samhället.

Ibland fick vi kommentarer från läsare som undrade varför WPBeginner inte var responsivt.

Även om jag förstår vikten av responsiv design, är det ännu viktigare att you fattar datadrivna beslut när det gäller att prioritera uppgifter i your business.

År 2012 när vi lanserade WPBv4-design var mindre än 2% av vår publik på mobilen.

Idag, 2016, har den siffran ökat till cirka 7%.

Detta är fortfarande mycket lågt jämfört med mina andra webbplatser som List25 där över 50% av användarna är på mobilen.

Men det är vettigt eftersom de flesta människor inte installerar tillägg på sina WordPress-webbplatser via mobila enheter. De flesta gör inte kodändringar på mobilen. De flesta försöker inte fixa vanliga WordPress error på mobilen.

Därför var det inte vår högsta prioritet att göra WPBeginner responsivt. Men när mobilanvändningen passerade 5% började vi planera för en omdesign som även adresserade andra utmaningar.

WPBeginnerv5 Responsive

En annan utmaning vi stod inför var användbarheten på sajten. I takt med att vi addade mer content blev det svårare för användarna att hitta det de letade efter. Vi hade till exempel 8 artiklar som handlade om att snabba upp WordPress, men ingen omfattande steg-för-steg-lösning.

Vi tittade på de högst upp skrivna sökningarna i WPBeginners sökformulär för att skapa omfattande steg-för-steg tutorials som nu snabbt markeras i designen.

WPBv5 Comprehensive Guides

Vi har också gjort det enklare att söka i WPBeginner med ett överlägg för sökning på full vy i headern och ett extra sökfält i sidebaren.

Vidarebefordran kommer vi att göra det lättare för användare att hitta vad de letar efter genom att skapa content-portaler som kreativt utnyttjar WordPress tags.

Vad är nytt i WPBv5

Core-funktionaliteten på webbplatsen har förblivit densamma. Här är några anmärkningsvärda förändringar på webbplatsen:

Responsiv design av website

WPBeginners website är nu 100% responsive, så den ser bra ut på all devices.

Vi har valt att klistra oss fast vid det populära Genesis-ramverket för att bygga vårt customize barntema.

Omfattande guider

Om du tittar i sidebaren på varje page, kommer du att se en new section ”I need help with…” som lyfter fram omfattande guider som gillar hur man snabbar upp WordPress, hur man förbättrar WordPress säkerhet, hur man optimerar WordPress sökmotorsoptimering, och mycket mer.

Bättre synlighet för våra produkter

I folkräkningen för WPBeginner var en av frågorna jag ställde att nämna en produkt som vi äger. Det var ganska förvånande hur många som inte kände till våra produkter. I den nya designen kommer vi att göra ett bättre jobb med att lyfta fram de produkter vi äger.

Detta börjar med en new page med premium tillägg till WordPress.

Vi kommer också att rotera produkterna i vår sidebar samt i våra nyhetsbrevsannonser.

FontAwesome och New Font

You might notice the use of icon font in the new designer. Det anropas FontAwesome, och jag är ett stort fan av Dave Gandys arbete.

Vi använder hans arbete på all våra produkter och är stolta supportrar för FontAwesome.

Ett roligt faktum är att du faktiskt kan add to WPBeginners logga som font om du använder FontAwesome och våra andra egenskaper.

I den nya designen använder vi nu fonten Proxima Nova genom Typekit.

Nytt plugin för delning

Tidigare använde vi en variant av Floating Social Bar plugin.

Efter ändringarna från Twitter, Facebook och andra – kände jag att det var dags att skapa ett nytt plugin för delning för WPBeginner.

Det drar exakt Twitter-antalet, men ännu viktigare är att det nu har ett totalt antal delningar.

New Share Plugin

Jag valde att stoppa det flytande beteendet och i stället läggs delningsknapparna nu till i början och i slutet av varje post. Detta kommer att bidra till en bättre upplevelse för användare på mindre vyer.

New eBook och Optin-formulär

Längst ner i varje post kommer du att se ett nytt optin-formulär för att downloada min WordPress verktygslåda. Denna e-bok delar exakt de tools som vi använder på våra websites.

Den skiljer sig från WPBeginners blueprint eftersom den bara visar dig vad vi använder på WPBeginner.

Verktygslådans e-bok är mer omfattande.

Jag ersatte också sidebarens optin-formulär med MonsterLinks, en optin-process i två steg. Optin-formuläret i sidebar konverterade inte i tillräckligt hög grad för att motivera fastigheten. Så nu om du vill prenumerera via email, kan du göra det genom att click på email iconen i sidebaren.

Vad händer härnäst?

Notis: Förutom förändringarna i front-end har vi gjort en hel del förändringar i back-end som kommer att göra det lättare för WPBeginner-teamet att skapa mer omfattande guider under de kommande månaderna.

WPBeginner Videos membership site kommer att få en översyn. För närvarande använder den fortfarande det gamla temat.

Vi kommer att förvandla det till ett LMS-system som kommer att samla nybörjarvideokursen och våra 500+ YouTube videoklipp på en centraliserad plats.

Målet med den webbplatsen skulle vara att erbjuda mer organiserade kurser för att göra det enkelt för användare att lära sig WordPress snabbt.

    Actually I also wanted to same look for my website that is also related to deal and coupon business. I have also setup genesis framework and genesis-simple child theme but I don’t know how you achieve header toggle option and deal post can you guide me

    Love the redesign. Just out of interest, what do you think of Google’s announcement on pop ups and rankings? For once I’m with Google on this. I hadn’t been on your site more than a couple of seconds before a pop up appears asking me to subscribe (I do already). I’ve not had time to even check out the content and see if I like it and I’m being asked to subscribe. It’s become a constant irritant online. Is there a way you can add tracking to opt in monster, so that if I’m clicking through from one of your newsletters, the subscribe pop up doesn’t appear? Now, that would be a selling point.
    Anyway I digress (couldn’t help it, the pop was REALLY annoying!!) – your site looks great and your content is really fabulous. Ask visitors if they want to subscribe after they’ve had time to read your content and you may find you get a higher opt in rate….

      Thanks for the kind words. The sharing plugin is not available at this time because it was custom coded for WPBeginner. We may release it in the future, but it’s not ready for public release just yet.

    …OK! excellent!.. Following you from long long time… this update is fast … super UX-UI… clear… (except your logo…little fuzzy)… Love the contrasting colors… and easy instructions… I agree with you; I do not use my Note5 to fix anything….personally i read all when i am not in my office and then i apply whatever i need from my desktop/laptop… I am eager to check a lot of things where i need help… Thank you and Congratulations…!!

    I stumbled upon your blog and it has a lot improve my wp experience.

    I like the way you guys explained. The insights mereka true showing that your team really test it before writing about it. Not some blog who just copy paste and edit it just to rank on gogle.

    Like the new design. While it is true that when I am working on my sites, I am not on mobile. I do receive your emails on my mobile, and quite often I save them to read at my local coffee house to read. This will make things a lot better. Good luck with the new design.

    Hello, WP Beginner, I recently started working with wordpress cms and found it very easy because I use most (if not all) of your site materials. I build websites for clients and I have my a free host company I use. I browse through your site, at least, not less than 8 times a day, looking for solutions to solve my clients’ problems. I was browsing through your site when it suddenly changed from the old design to this new one! I loved the former one than this because the former design displayed a full-width navigation menu on my small phone, making it very easy to navigate through, but this new design shrinks the whole navigation items into a ”MENU” I must click on before the rest are displayed! I would love to use this opportunity to ask, ”how can I remove the responsiveness from a wordpress theme and make it display a full width navigation menu even on smart phones. One of my clients have been asking for it, and I can’t solve that problem. Thanks and God bless.

      I use a theme from the wordpress theme directory and the name of the theme is WP knowledge base. how can i remove the responsiveness from the particular theme, and from all themes in general, making it display a FULL WIDTH NAVIGATION MENU even on small phone screens, exactly as your former design was.       Thanks for the feedback. Most users find the collapsed navigational menu easier to use on smaller screens. It is easier to tap, and more items can be displayed in the menu.

      If you would like to use full-width menu, then you can start with a WordPress theme that is not fully responsive. You can also set width using CSS.

    I have to say, I had NO idea that you were the owners of those plugins!
    Quite frankly, I thought someone with less than desirable scruples had taken over Yoast Analytics so it is great to now know that someone as reputable as WPBeginner is the owner!

    I love the new look of the site. Nice job! It appears that your total width is around 940px. Was there any specific reason for going with the narrow width?

      Because most of our content images are 520px wide. We want to make sure that we keep our site fast because a lot of our users don’t have fast internet. Going with bigger content width and uploading larger size images further slows down the site.

      This is not noticeable in the western part of the world, but a lot of other countries have very slow internet.

        If you weren’t as considered about existing image sizes or slow internet speeds, would you have changed the width? I always struggle when creating new sites what is the best content width. So, I’d love to hear any insights. Thanks!
