Why Use an Internal Linking Plugin for WordPress?

Internal links are links between pages on your own website. Having internal links is important for your WordPress SEO. They help search engines like Google crawl your website and discover new content to index and rank.

For example, the paragraph above has two internal links to our relevant content, which not only helps users but also helps search engine rankings.

Generally, the more links a page has pointing to it, the more likely it is to rank higher in search results. That means that you can use internal links to point to important pages on your site as a way to increase their traffic.

Internal links also help your visitors easily find related articles and provide a better user experience overall. This can also help increase pageviews and reduce your bounce rate.

WordPress provides an easy way to add links to your blog posts and pages. However, manually adding internal links can be time-consuming, and the chances are that you might miss an opportunity to link an important page.

This is where an internal linking plugin for WordPress comes in handy. It helps save time and lets you automatically link specific keywords and focus keyphrases.

You also get suggestions for adding internal links. This way, you won’t miss out on linking essential pages. It even helps find content that doesn’t have any internal links and offers recommendations for building internal links.

How We Test and Review Internal Linking Plugins

When selecting internal linking plugins to recommend, we kept the following factors in mind:

  • Different use cases: Not all tools are perfect for every situation. That’s why we included tools that cater to various needs, such as link suggestions, link optimization, adding links automatically, and creating lists of related or popular posts.
  • We used and tested each plugin: We only recommend plugins we use on WPBeginner or have tested on demo websites. We also review feedback from real users to make sure the plugins are reliable.
  • Ease of use: Since we are looking for tools that save time when adding internal links, we prioritized user-friendly tools with a straightforward interface.

Why Trust WPBeginner?

WPBeginner has been a go-to resource for WordPress users since 2009. Our content team has years of WordPress experience and always adds relevant internal links when writing and updating content.

We also test each plugin carefully before recommending it on our website. That’s why millions of WordPress users trust our content.

That said, let’s look at the best internal link plugins for WordPress.

1. All in One SEO – Link Assistant

The All in One SEO plugin

All in One SEO (AIOSEO) is the best SEO plugin for WordPress, and it comes with a powerful Link Assistant feature that helps you easily build better internal links.

It automatically crawls the links on your WordPress website and provides a detailed Link Report. You can see the number of internal links, outbound links, and affiliate links for each post.

Link assistant overview

We have thoroughly tested and reviewed All in One SEO and regularly use its Link Assistant on our partner websites to get smart internal link suggestions based on our existing content.

We love how you can see each post recommended for internal linking, along with the exact phrase or anchor text on which it will create the link. With a click of a button, you can then add the recommended links to your content.

Find internal link opportunities and orphaned pages

Plus, you get to see orphaned pages. These are pages that have no internal links. Adding links to these pages can help them to get indexed faster and rank higher in search results.

AIOSEO also lets you quickly search for blog posts to link to from inside the WordPress content editor and provides options to add nofollow, sponsored, and UGC (user-generated content) tags.

Other than that, AIOSEO offers many other powerful features to optimize your website. You can create XML sitemaps, perform an SEO audit, find and fix broken links, optimize your site for rich snippets, and more.

Bonus: AIOSEO recently released a free Broken Link Checker plugin. It’s an essential tool for making sure your internal links are working correctly.

It automatically scans your website and notifies you of any broken links. If broken links are found, you can use easy inline editing to fix the URLs instead of updating each post. There’s also a pro version of Broken Link Checker that scans both internal and external links.

Pros of All in One SEO:

  • AIOSEO is easy for beginners to navigate and simplifies the process of adding and managing links
  • Provides automatic link suggestions, identifying opportunities to interlink relevant posts and pages
  • The automation of link suggestions and management allows you to save time
  • Offers a broader suite of SEO tools

Cons of All in One SEO:

  • Link Assistant is not available in the free version
  • Some features may still require a learning curve

Why we recommend All in One SEO: AIOSEO offers internal linking alongside other SEO features. We use its automatic link suggestions and many other features across our partner websites.

Pros of Internal Link Juicer:

  • Automatically creates internal links based on specified keywords, saving time and effort

Rank Math is an SEO plugin for WordPress that provides intelligent suggestions for internal links as you write your content. These suggestions are displayed inside the WordPress content editor and can be instantly added to the post using copy and paste.

While we find this feature helpful, Rank Math link builder is not as comprehensive as AIOSEO but rather more in line with basic link-building solutions like Yoast SEO.

Besides link suggestions, the plugin also offers other features like Google Schema Markup, keyword rank tracking, 404 error tracking, redirection manager, and more.

I was looking for a handy plugin where I could input keywords along with links, and it would automatically insert these links into all articles containing those keywords, turning them into links to other articles. This way, I wouldn’t have to go back and manually build internal links article by article on websites that come my way. The plugin Internal Link Juicer seems to meet these requirements perfectly. Plus, it’s free. What more could you ask for?

  2. Mrteesurez

Thanks for this list. I will be checking out the feature on AIOSEO. My question are:
    1. Is broken link checker built-in to AIOSEO or is another plugin entirely.
    2. Does AIOSEO offers automatic links add up like the “Link Juicer” plugin you just mentioned.
    3. Can I add and customize table of contents with AIOSEO.
I want know so as to stick to just one plugin, AIOSEO, instead of installing multiple plugins. thanks.

    • WPBeginner Support

      1. Broken Link checker is its own plugin.
      2. AIOSEO has the option to recommend internal links to you.
      3. You can create and customize a table of contents with AIOSEO

This is amazing for anyone looking to improve their website’s internal linking! Between simple and advanced plugins is helpful, especially for beginners. For someone just starting out, YARPP or Contextual Related Posts seem like user-friendly options to automatically suggest relevant content. For those who want more control, Internal Link Juicer sounds like a powerful tool. Thanks for this informative guide!

Link Whisper vs Link Juicer, free versions
    Which one to choose?

    • WPBeginner Support

That would be a preference question, we would recommend giving the plugins a try and seeing which one works best for you :)

      Admin

    • SeoB

If free then Link Juicer. You can get work done more easily as it more or less automatically places the links whereas the free version of Link Whisper doesn’t offer automation just adds tips but the work remains on you. Focus on writing thorough content then use Link Juicer to interlink relevant articles.

    • Dayo Olobayo

I use Internal Link Juicer plugin and it works for me for the intended purpose. The good thing is that it’s a free plugin. You might want to give it a try.

  5. Moinuddin Waheed

Internal linking is one the best ways to increase the chances of getting more engagement with the content.
I didn’t know how to add internal linking except the manual way but that seems time taking and laborious at times.
Having some automation for this purpose seems promising.
Just curious about how wpbeginner does internal linking, manual or automatic because your internal links are so relevant to the post one is already engaging with?

    • WPBeginner Support

We manually decide the internal links to use and use the plugin recommendations as possible ideas for what to link to :)

      Admin

      • Dennis Muthomi

Hi WPBeginner Support, since you mentioned using the plugin’s recommendations, I’m curious – which internal linking plugin do you primarily use at WPBeginner to get those helpful suggestions?

        • WPBeginner Support

At the moment we use AIOSEO :)

  6. Ahmed Omar

nice comparison, it seems that AIOSEO have all what you need for your site
I am using Internal Link Juicer, which is good for me with the free version
    Thank you

Regarding internal links, I’d like to ask about one thing. I create internal links manually for one specific reason. I’ve often struggled with the Google Search Console when using automatic plugins. The issue arises when these automatic tools place links very close together within the text. The Google Search Console then reports issues with the mobile interface, stating that clickable elements are too close to each other. To resolve this, I end up creating internal links manually, ensuring they aren’t too close, thus avoiding errors reported by the Google Search Console regarding the mobile interface. How do you handle this situation? I notice that your links are often quite close together. Do you encounter problems with the Google Search Console reporting issues with clickable elements on the mobile interface?

    • WPBeginner Support

It would depend on the specific content and would require testing for what works best for your site. We do not currently have that issue with search console.

      Admin

      • Jiří Vaněk

Thank you for your response. I eventually switched to the plugin and tried to ignore these errors in Google Search Console. After some time, Google stopped reporting these errors, and now everything seems to be fine. I did a minor redesign of the website, so the issue might have been with the template, where Google didn’t like the design and then had problems with internal links. In any case, thank you for your feedback and your time.

  8. AMIR HAMZA

Does the internal link juicer plugin works only for internal linking? No outgoing linking?

    • WPBeginner Support

The plugin is only for internal links at the moment not outbound links :)
